Low Key Return For Kinky Boom

3 minute read

Exciting filly Kinky Boom will make a low key start to her second campaign at Sandown on Wednesday.

Trainer Tony McEvoy is looking for a confidence building first-up win from Kinky Boom in Wednesday’s 1000m dash for 2YOs where she has the topweight of 58kg.

McEvoy has a big opinion of Kinky Boom and believes the Spirit Of Boom filly has Group One potential.

That was evident in her first two starts early this year when she burst on the scene with a super last to first win in the Listed Inglis Premier (1200m) at Caulfield in February.

She then took on the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes but was run off her feet early before finishing 11th behind top colt Written By.

McEvoy said not pressing deeper into the autumn with Kinky Boom after the Blue Diamond will stand her in good stead for her spring campaign.

"She's coming along nicely,” McEvoy said. “I'm not quite sure how far she'll get distance wise but at this stage I'll be looking at races up 1400 metres for her.

"If she'll tell us if she wants a mile we can go to the Thousand Guineas but a race like the Golden Rose could also be an ideal for her."

McEvoy said Wednesday’s Sandown race will be a nice lead into the G3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 19 for Kinky Boom.

Kinky Boom’s return starts an important period for the McEvoy stable with his top filly Sunlight to resume at Morphettville on Saturday in the Lightning Stakes (1050m).

Sunlight is firmly established as one of the best young fillies in the country after winning five of her first seven starts including the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast and G2 Silver Slipper Stakes and G2 Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill before her game third in the Golden Slipper Stakes.

“She's did very well during her break and her trial win last week was all I expected,” McEvoy said.

“She's just a fabulous racehorse and at this stage the signs are that she has taken no harm from that first preparation at all.

“She's still got that great energy and willingness.”

At this stage McEvoy has the G1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 28 as the first major spring target for Sunlight.

“If there's an opportunity for a filly with no weight on her back to run in a Group One, I'll take it,” McEvoy said of his Moir Stakes plans.

Oohood, the other star youngster in the McEvoy stable and recognised as the best young maiden in Australia, is set for the G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield in October.

The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum-owned filly never finished out of the placings in six starts without a win including three G1 placings in the Blue Diamond Stakes, Golden Slipper and ATC Sires' Produce Stakes.

"Oohood has grown and really thickened up which she needed to do,” McEvoy said.

Among his older horses McEvoy is relieved that G1 Australian Guineas and Manikato Stakes winner Hey Doc has recovered from an injury that forced him to miss the autumn.

Hey Doc strained pectoral muscles when unplaced in the G1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February but is back in work at Flemington and is being aimed at a second win in the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley in October.
