Master Ash, a winner of a 2YO maiden (1250m) at Canterbury at his second start on July 4, advanced quickly two starts later to take out this Group 3 race in good style. He eased after a quick beginning to settle nicely in fourth place (one out and one back) before improving nearing the home turn. He dashed to the front at the 200m and then went on to score impressively. Danawi was quickly away from his wide barrier (9) and soon went to the front. He then fought back well when challenged in the straight for second, his third such placing in three starts to date. The favourite, Lindsay Park-trained gelding Smart Elissim had a good trip in fourth place on the rails, got along the inner at the 200m and then battled on quite well for third. Irukandji raced in sixth place, one off the rails, moved up at the 300m and then battled on nicely in the sprint home for (1.7 lengths) a sound first-up fourth.
