2018 CHELMSFORD STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Chelmsford Stakes is a Group 2 race run under Weight For Age conditions for open class horses at Randwick conducted by the Australian Turf Club.

The Chelmsford Stakes is run over 1600m. It has been occasionally run at Warwick Farm and Rosehill but Randwick is the traditional home.

Winx wins Chelmsford in thriller!

It was first run in 1895 and was won by Newman. It is run on the Tattersalls Club race day.

The Chelmsford Stakes has mostly been at 1600m but has been as short as 1400m and as long as 1800m.

The Chelmsford Stakes has always been a Group 2 race. This is a race which is not a G1 but is won by G1 horses.

It can often be a huge upset race which isn’t usual for WFA races. For instance Complacent won at 40-1 and Stargazer won at 33-1.

Even though a lot of Cox Plate/Cups horses run in the Chelmsford Stakes, Winx in 2017 is the last one to win the race plus one of the Melbourne big races since Might And Power in 1998. Kingston Town was the previous one before that.

It was Winx’s 19th win in a row during her amazing streak. She was about 12 lengths back at the 600m mark in 2017 as Red Excitement took off but she rounded the leader up over the concluding stages.

Last horse to do the Chelmsford Stakes/Epsom Hcp double was Filante in 1996.

The 2007 race was not held due to the Equine Influenza break out.

The 2018 Chelmsford Stakes will be run for prizemoney of $250,000.

Notable winners of the Chelmsford Stakes include Winx (2017), Hartnell (2016), Hawkspur (2013/2014), Danleigh (2012), Theseo (2010), Eremein (2006), Lonhro (2002/2003), Intergaze (1999), Might And Power (1998), Juggler (1997), Filante (1996), Soho Square (1993), Dr Grace (1992), Stargazer (1990/1991), Sky Chase (1988), Campaign King (1987), Hayai (1984), Emancipation (1983), Kingston Town (1980/1981), Ming Dynasty (1978), Gunsynd (1970), Roman Consul (1967/1968/1969), Tulloch (1960), Prince Darius (1957/1958), Delta (1950/1951/1952), Bernborough (1946), Rogilla (1933/1934), Phar Lap (1930), Limerick (1926/1927/1928), Heroic (1924) and Gloaming (1918).
