Bowman Back With Le Romain At Randwick

3 minute read

Hugh Bowman will be reunited with multiple G1 winner Le Romain when the Randwick specialist takes on Saturday’s $200,000 Tramway Stakes.

Trainer Kris Lees had to seek a new rider for Le Romain due to the gelding’s first-up winning rider James McDonald being committed to Pierata in the G2 Tramway (1400m).

McDonald landed the G3 Show County Quality (1200m) on Le Romain when the versatile sprinter/miler resumed under 61kg at Randwick on August 18.

However he is honouring a prior commitment to ride Pierata after he teamed with that 4YO for the first time when he won the G2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on August 4.

Bowman has ridden Le Romain eight times for three wins including the G1 Cantala Stakes at Flemington in 2016. He was also aboard when the gelding won his maiden at the Newcastle Cup carnival in 2015.

Lees is delighted with Le Romain’s progress since the Show County and is keen to run him for a second time in the Tramway after he ran second to subsequent Epsom winner Hauraki in the 2016 edition.

Lees remains hopeful Le Romain’s Tramway appearance will give the two remaining Everest slot holders without a confirmed representative food for thought as they assess prospects for the $13 million feature at Randwick on October 13.

Few top class performers have a better Randwick record than Le Romain. He has won five races on the course including the 2016 Randwick Guineas and has missed a place only three times in his 14 starts on the track.

Lees will also start G1 winner Prized Icon and the exciting filly Miss Fabulass at Randwick on Saturday.

Prized Icon, a close first-up third in the Spring Preview (1400m) at Rosehill on August 11, lines up in the $250,000 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) where he will be suited by the wfa conditions.

Jason Collett was booked for Prized Icon in the Chelmsford but he was suspended at Hawkesbury last Thursday.

Collett has applied to stewards to alter the dates of his suspension so that he can stay on the Lees-trained Graff in The Run To The Rose at Rosehill on Saturday week and will not ride this weekend.

Miss Fabulass faces her biggest test at only her third start when she runs in the $200,000 Furious Stakes (1200m) against her own sex at set weights.

“I’m looking forward to stepping Miss Fabulass up to Saturday company in the Furious.

“She has trained on strongly since her recent midweek Canterbury victory and Kerrin McEvoy will ride her again,” Lees said.
