Exciting Miss Fabulass 'Just Like Mum'

3 minute read

Exciting filly Miss Fabulass is the closest replica to her famous dam Samantha Miss says the man who has had both under his care.

Trainer Kris Lees made the comparison ahead of the highly-regarded Miss Fabulass attempting to make a big jump from a maiden win to Group company at Randwick on Saturday.

Miss Fabulass won her maiden class at Canterbury on August 15 when she beat only two rivals over 1100m but such is the boom on the Frankel filly that she is favourite for the $200,000 Furious Stakes (1200m).

Samantha Miss won seven races including three Group 1 events for Lees before injury forced her premature retirement after only 12 starts.

“I’ve seen all her foals and this filly Miss Fabulass is the closest replica to her,” Lees said.

Samantha Miss was sent to England by owner John Singleton to be mated with unbeaten European champion Frankel and Miss Fabulass is the product.

Samantha Miss raced five times as a two-year-old and was having her seventh start when she won the 2008 Furious Stakes on a heavy Randwick surface.

Miss Fabulass raced only once as a two-year-old and is fronting up on Saturday for only her third start.

She faces a big task at set weights against some well-performed three-year-old fillies but Lees is not backing away from the challenge.

“It’s a decent jump in grade but Miss Fabulass is in terrific order,” he said. “She has trained on beautifully since the Canterbury race.”

Samantha Miss went on to finish an unlucky third in the G1 WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley before proving too classy for her rivals in the G1 VRC Oaks in the spring of 2008.

Lees is not yet looking ahead that far with Miss Fabulass just yet.

“She will follow the same path as Samantha Miss did in Sydney - the Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes are her immediate targets.”

Lees also runs Le Romain (Tramway Stakes), Prized Icon (Chelmsford Stakes), and Reginae (BM 74 Handicap) at Randwick.

He has withdrawn unbeaten Gem Song from Reginae’s race and Milseain from the BM 94 Handicap.

Lees has sent his talented sprinter Tactical Advantage to Queensland for the Sunshine Coast metropolitan meeting on Saturday.

Jeff Lloyd will ride the well-performed five-year-old in the Class 6 Plate (1000m).

“There hasn’t been anything suitable for him in Sydney,” Lees explained.

“Tactical Advantage looks really well placed in the Sunshine Coast race under the set weights conditions.”

Tactical Advantage has won six of his 15 starts and been placed on another six occasions.

He has raced twice for Lees, brilliantly winning the July Sprint (1100m) first-up at Royal Randwick on July 21 and then turned in another excellent performance under 61kg when narrowly beaten by Trekking at Rosehill on August 11.

Lees also runs Olympic Academy (Lloyd) at the Sunshine Coast and is hoping he can turn around his form.

The eight-year-old hasn’t fired in three runs so far this campaign, the latest when eighth to Shalmaneser in the Taree Cup (2000m) on August 19.

Lees has withdrawn Reach For Heaven from his race at the Sunshine Coast and is also likely to skip the meeting with another poorly drawn acceptor Dal Cielo.

Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly Pure Elation score a very good first-up effort in winning here. Having her first start since taking out the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) here in April, she settled in fifth place on the rails from her inside barrier (1), improved to third at the home turn but was blocked on turning for home before getting through on the inner to take the lead at the 200m. She then went on to score in very good style. Fiesta settled back in second last place in the 12-horse field, improved along the inner at the home turn, took a split to challenge at the 100m and then battled on well for second. Pretty In Pink raced back in seventh place (between runners), put in a strong run (out deep) from the 200m and ran on very well for third in a promising first-up effort. The favourite Oohood raced in fifth place, one off the rails, put in a bid at the 300m and the battled on for (1.6 lengths) fourth, still remaining a maiden after eight starts, all against the strongest of company. Outback Barbie went back from her wide barrier (12) and caught the eye running on for fifth, while Miss Fabulass was handy all the way before battling on for (2.4 lengths) sixth.
