Black Type Targets For Wyong Winners

3 minute read

Trainer Kris Lees has confirmed his spring aspirations for classy prospect Smart Melody following her dominant first-up win at the Wyong Cup meeting on Friday.

Carrying the famous Gooree Stud colours, the Smart Missile filly brought up her third win from three starts with a soft win in a Class 2 event over 1200m.

Lees said Smart Melody will have her next start in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on September 15 or the G2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on the same day.

“There are some smart three-year-olds going around but I think she’s one of them,” Lees said.

“Any horse that shows you a bit over the winter you are a little anxious when they return in the spring and she was a three-year-old filly taking on older horses.

“It wasn’t ideal, but I think there were a lot of positives to the win.

“She was good through the line which is what you want going forward.

“I like the way she relaxed. I’d like to think she will get to a mile, we are a long way off that but she was good late.”

Scone trainer Paul Messara also has some big spring aspirations for his rising star Panzerfaust after she recorded her second win in five starts over 1600m at the Wyong meeting.

Messara’s stable representative Leah Gauranich said the G1 Spring Champion Stakes and G1 VRC Oaks were on the radar for the well bred filly following her strong win over 1600m.

The Redoute’s Choice filly is a full sister to Group winner Panzer Division.

Gauranich said the G1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 6 is the immediate assignment for Panzerfaust and beyond that the Oaks (2500m) at Flemington in November.

“If she continues improving and racing well the Oaks is the goal,” Gauranich said.

“It was a comfortable win. Obviously with a potential Oaks prospect that’s what we want to see, to put them away like that.”

Impressive newcomer Prophet’s Thumb is set to take a quick jump into black type company after her sharp debut win at the Wyong Cup meeting.

Trainer David Pfieffer has the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on September 15 earmarked as the next start for the I Am Invincible filly before a possible trip to Melbourne.

“Prophet’s Thumb has always shown us a bit of talent but we’ve just had to be patient with her, not physically but mentally,” said stable representative James Ferguson.

“It was a nice educational day out for her. We are very pleased to see her win when we know what she’s been doing at home.”
