Former Kiwi Disturbance will likely run in Sunday’s 2018 Cootamundra Cup following his surprise victory in the $60,500, Dubbo Cup, 1600m.

The 5yo Team Joseph gelding got the run of the race at Dubbo with Matt Cahill in the saddle and came away to salute at $35.0.

Disturbance was having his fourth run for the Canberra stable and was third-up at Dubbo off a disappointing run on a BM 76 at Randwick-Kensington.

He’d raced well in good company in New Zealand, and prior to Dubbo had been settling back in his races.

“At Dubbo we instructed Matt Cahill to let him sit closer to see if we could turn his form around,” said stable spokesperson Zane Jones.

“He’s a nice horse and a strong worker and we knew he had the ability to win a race like the Dubbo Cup.

“Matt gave him a gun ride and we were delighted for the New Zealand owners — Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong.

“They trained the horse in NZ and felt he’d be suited by the dryer tracks in Australia. It was a satisfying result all around.”

Disturbance is nominated for Moruya on Friday, but is more likely to race on Sunday at Cootamundra — again at the mile.

Meanwhile, another former Kiwi in the Joseph, Jones and Jones yard, the Canberra Cup winner Almost Court, has had a minor setback and will have about 10 days out.
