U S Navy Flag will be in Sydney this week but he scored last season in this G1. The 2018 Dewhurst Stakes (1408m) at Newmarket on Saturday is one to watch.

2018 DEWHURST STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Dewhurst Stakes is a Group 1 race run under Set Weight conditions for two year old colts and fillies at Newmarket conducted by the Jockey Club.

The Dewhurst Stakes is run over seven furlongs. It was first run in 1875 and was won by Kisber.

It is the middle peg of the juvenile Group 1s pattern with the Racing Post Trophy to come.

Founded by breeder Thomas Gee, it was named after the Dewhurst Stud. It is noted as the producer of classic winners.

Aidan O’Brien has won the last three editions and four of the last five. Before him Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning took out five of seven renewals.

Recent 2000 Guineas winners to win the Dewhurst include Churchill, Dawn Approach, Frankel and Rock Of Gibraltar.

Lester Piggott has an incredible ten winners as jockey while John Porter and Frank Butters lead the trainers with eight each.

The Dewhurst Stakes is worth £500,000 in 2018.
