2018 MACKINNON STAKES – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Trap For Fools is the leader. Think Latrobe will want to press forward and try and make it a test of stamina.

BLAIR HOUSE finds a very winnable Group 1 here. Ran up to win the Caulfield Stakes last time but couldn't force his way past Benbatl who backed that form up with a top effort in the Cox Plate. This looks lengths easier than that contest and he should get a soft run on the back of the speed from barrier two.

TRAP FOR FOOLS can be in this for a long way. Top effort in the Moonee Valley Cup and better suited back to this trip.

LATROBE may need further but he will stick on. Irish Derby winner has to be respected. Shillelagh won well last week and has a hope off that.

Highly consistent gelding Trap For Fools won his 13th race (with eight placings) in 31 starts with a gamely victory here, his first at Group 1 level. He began well and went to the front as expected and then settled nicely for John Allen. He grabbed a break shortly after rounding the home turn and then dug deep over the closing stages to score narrowly but well. Latrobe, winner of the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) in June, staged a very good performance at his first start since September and his first start in Australia. He settled in eighth place, one off the rails, before commencing his move coming to the home turn. He then sprinted quickly, challenged strongly at the 100m and fought really well for (head) second. The Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Extra Brut raced at the tail of the ten-horse field before switching out at the 300m. He then ran on strongly for a close-up third in a really smart performance in this Group 1 weight-for-age race. Prized Icon raced in fourth place (one out and one back), moved up nicely on straightening and then battled well for (2.2) lengths fourth. The Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Shillelagh raced in last place, improved between runners on turning for home but was badly checked at the 200m before finishing an unlucky (3.2 lengths) fifth. Doubt Defying raced outside the leader (Trap For Fools) to the home turn, only weakening from the 200m for (4.5 lengths) sixth in a promising effort, advancing to this class. The favourite Blair House settled in seventh place on the rails, got a split on straightening, went to second at the 200m but disappointed, just battling on from there for (5.3 lengths) seventh.
