Conquering Stakes Next For I'm Wesley

3 minute read

Tasmanian star I'm Wesley will be aimed at a rare double-double after his second win in the Listed Newmarket Handicap at Launceston.

Having become the seventh horse to win back-to-back Newmarkets in the 113-year history of the race, I'm Wesley will now be set for the Listed Conquering Stakes at the same track early next month.

I’m Wesley also won the Conquering Stakes in 2017 in race record time.

Trainer Glenn Stevenson was delighted with I'm Wesley's return to the track off a seven-week break last Wednedsay night. The Newmarket was his first start since he finished fourth in a Listed 1400m event at Flemington in early October.

“I took him along gradually since he came back from Melbourne. What we saw was only a glimpse of what’s to come," Stevenson said.

The Newmarket is considered Tasmania’s premier sprint race over 1200 metres with I’m Wesley only the seventh horse to win the race in successive years since it’s inception in 1905.

Brendon McCoull rated the six-year-old superbly to have his rivals off the bit and chasing at the top of the home straight. He kicked clear and went on to score by almost two lengths from Gee Gee Lanett with Scrutineer a fast-finishing third.

An $8,000 weanling purchase, I’m Wesley improved his record to 12 wins and 10 placings from 34 starts for $389,800 in earnings.
