Goulburn Cup - Second Chance For Fabrizio

3 minute read

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have given bold front runner Fabrizio a second chance to win today’s $150,000 Goulburn Cup after his failure as favourite last year.

Fabrizio could finish only fifth last year under the topweight of 62kg, but all was not lost for the Waterhouse/Bott team as his stablemate Dark Eyes won the race.

It was Waterhouse’s second Goulburn Cup success after she won the race in 2012 with Kinnersley prior to forming her training partnership with Bott.

Fabrizio is again the topweight for this year’s Goulburn Cup with 61.5kg and heads the market after two solid lead-up runs since resuming from a spell.

Rachel King also gets a second chance on Fabrizio after being his rider last year.

Fabrizio was seen in his familiar role as leader at his latest start when he finished a solid third in the Listed Ladies Day Cup over 1400m at Hawkesbury on November 8.

The Hawkesbury race provides a strong guide to the Goulburn Cup with the Godolphin gelding Interlocuter set for a rematch with Fabrizio after finishing fourth in that race.

Christian Reith rides Interlocuter, in receipt of 4.5kg from Fabrizio and certain to be suited by the step up from 1400m to 1600m on the spacious Goulburn track.

Interlocuter, a proven Group performer, started his career in France before making his mark here. He has been placed in all three attempts at 1600m and has had two well-spaced runs this campaign leading into the Goulburn Cup.

He is among a big list of imports in the Goulburn Cup field including the Kris Lees-trained Articus, a much-travelled galloper who has raced in Germany and France and also Melbourne and Adelaide since landing in Australia.

Articus (Andrew Gibbons) has had a month since his last start second over 1400m on a heavy track at Randwick and was scratched from Saturday’s Rosehill meeting to target the Goulburn Cup.

Lees is also sending the honest mare Karavali from his Newcastle stable for the Goulburn Cup.

Local hopes rest with the French import Green Sweet, now trained at Goulburn by Danny Williams.

His only win in Australia was in the 2017 Albury Cup when trained by Jean Dubois.
