Summer Plans For Tasmanian Stars

3 minute read

Talented galloper Speed Force will be aimed at the Devonport Cup as a replacement for stablemate Speedonova.

Trainer Bill Ryan had planned to tackle the Devonport Cup with Speedonova but that plan was aborted after the mare’s last start failure in the Golden Mile at Devonport.

[nSpeed Force[/n] stepped up as an admirable replacement following his impressive last start win at Elwick under 62kg last week.

Despite carrying the huge weight, Speed Force cruised to an effortless win and gave Ryan plenty to smile about.

“The horse has been working extremely well and his first two runs this time in have been terrific without winning,” Ryan said.

“When Speedonova pulled up a bit scratchy after the Golden Mile I decided to switch directions for both horses and I’m glad I did.

“Speed Force will go to the Sheffield Cup on Sunday over 1650 metres and he’ll probably only carry 54kg.

“Then he can go on to the Devonport Cup over 1880 metres.”

Meanwhile Tasmania’s best sprinter I’m Wesley will do his coming racing in Victoria with the G3 Standish Handicap at Flemington on January 1 a likely next target.

I’m Wesley has raced himself out of available races in Tasmania until the Hobart and Launceston Cup carnivals in February after winning the Newmarket-Conquering Stakes double at Mowbray for the second year in succession.

He has now won 13 times in 35 starts and is proven in black type company in Victoria with placings in the Listed Bob Hoysted Stakes and Listed Hareeba Stakes, leaving his trainer Glenn Stevenson confident about his summer prospects in Melbourne.

"We pencilled the Standish in because I think Flemington suits him well," Stevenson said.

“We've been close a couple of times in Melbourne so it would be nice to top it off with a win over there.

“There’s not much for him here in Tassie until February. The options aren’t plentiful for a horse like him with such a high rating.

“We will take Brendon McCoull with him because I’d like him to stick with the horse through the whole preparation.”
