Snitzel colt Menari is set for a return to racing after less than satisfactory fertility results at stud.

Newgate Farm has confirmed that Menari is to return to his former trainer Gerald Ryan after getting only 20 mares in foal in his first season at stud.

Menari was retired last year after he suffered a tendon injury when being prepared for the second running of The Everest in October.

He had been taken by Everest slot holders Max Whitby and Neil Werrett before he went amiss.

Ryan said Menari had not met expectations in his first season at Newgate Farm but his low fertility would not necessarily mean the end of his stud career.

"There are many cases of stallions starting stud careers with low fertility but later proving a commercial success,” Ryan said.

“Menari was not fertile enough to serve a full book of mares and the decision was taken to put his stud career on hold.”

Ryan plans to set Menari for the G1 Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane in June if he stands up to training.

“We have had the tendon scanned and it looks OK,” Ryan said.

“He will come into the stable in about four weeks and we will see how he reacts under pressure.

“If any horse can get back to the track it is him.

“Daybreak Lover came back from stud and won a Stradbroke. Menari could do the same.”

Menari has had only eight starts for three wins and was G1 placed in the Golden Rose in September.
