3 minute read

Classy mare In Her Time and brilliant three-year-old Graff will be absent when trainer Kris Lees gives many of his autumn contenders barrier trials at Newcastle on Tuesday.

“They will both have jumpouts instead,” Lees said.

“Most likely Graff will go to Melbourne and trial there before resuming.”

Among the horses Lees has entered for Tuesday’s trials on the inner Beaumont track at Broadmeadow are G1 winners Le Romain, Sense Of Occasion and El Dorado Dreaming along with Invincible Gem, Miss Fabulass, Gem Song and Frankely Awesome.

Le Romain, Sense Of Occasion and Frankely Awesome will trial over 1000m. Invincible Gem, El Dorado Dreaming, Miss Fabulass and Gem Song will compete in 800m heats.

Triple G1 winner Le Romain and Frankely Awesome have already trialled at Wyong on January 9 since coming back into work.

Invincible Gem, Miss Fabulass, Gem Song, El Dorado Dreaming and Sense Of Occasion will be having their first trials this time in.

Le Romain, with his prizemoney earnings approaching $3.9 million, hasn’t raced since a courageous second to Best Of Days in the G1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on November 3.

Lees will decide after Tuesday’s trial if he resumes in the $200,000 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on February 2.

Flemington’s inaugural $5 million All Star Mile on March 16 is on the six-year-old’s agenda.

Lees has decided to spell Thursday’s Listed Takeover Target Stakes winner Tactical Advantage.

“He has done a good job and deserves a break,” Lees said. “We probably won’t see him again until late autumn.”

Lees has a busy weekend with runners in Sydney and Brisbane.

However he has scratched all three acceptors from Canterbury tonight and also Envy Of All from Rosehill tomorrow.

Another dual acceptor Zip A Dee Doo Dah is still engaged at Rosehill but is not a certain starter.

“I might wait and run him in a Benchmark 72 Handicap (1900m) at Canterbury on Wednesday,” Lees said.

Lees is banking on Eagle Farm’s roomy stretches will suit High Power on Saturday.

Jeff Lloyd takes over from sidelined Damian Browne on the promising four-year-old in hhis Benchmark 80 Handicap (2206m).

“High Power has been in terrific form but hasn’t had much luck in a few of his races,” Lees said.

“He has trained on well at the Gold Coast and I’m sure switching to a bigger track like Eagle Farm is really going to suit him.

High Power, a son of staying influence High Chaparral, was stiff last time on the tighter Gold Coast circuit when he surged home to be beaten in a photo-finish by Evolo in a similar race over 2200m.

Lees also runs Star Reflection (Lloyd) and Envy Of All (apprentice Corey Bayliss) at Eagle Farm’s second meeting since the track was re-opened for racing.

Star Reflection is chasing a hat-trick in the open sprint over 1200m after an upset win at big odds against her own sex on a soft Randwick surface on December 15 before she had no problem handling a good track and rise in distance in a Class 6 Plate (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 5.

Envy Of All, unplaced in three runs so far this campaign, has a gear change with a tongue tie added.

“She is a little suspect at 1200m, but hopefully putting the tongue tie on will help,” Lees said.

“She has been playing with her tongue so we’re not taking any chances tomorrow.”
