Mystic Journey Flies First-Up At Mowbray

3 minute read

Star Tasmanian filly Mystic Journey delivered a scintillating first-up performance when she came from last to score an effortless win in the Lady Lynette Stakes at Mowbray on Wednesday night.

Mystic Journey was having her first start since winning a G2 event at Moonee Valley in September.

Her trainer Adam Trinder said she is on target to tackle the G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington in March and will now go to Melbourne for her lead-up race.

“She will now head to Melbourne and tackle the Vanity Stakes for three-year-old fillies and that should have her in perfect shape to tackle the Australian Guineas,” Trinder said.

“Her sectional times were fairly good tonight and while there were a couple of anxious moments early in the race she ended up doing what I expected.”

Jockey Anthony Darmanin had the three-year-old near last on the rails 400m from home but when he extricated her from the pocket she motored home to score by over a length from My Biddy with Zuberina a game third.

Mystic Journey covered the last 600 metres in a brilliant 32.62 seconds.

Mystic Journey is one of two Tasmanian horses nominated for the $5 million All-Star Mile at Flemington two weeks after the Australian Guineas.

She should receive strong support from Tasmania as it is a popularity race with public votes determining the make-up of the 14-horse field.

If she doesn't earn enough votes she could earn an All-Star start by picking up a wildcard entry from Racing Victoria.

* Well bred three-year-old filly Glass Warrior booked a berth in the Tasmanian Oaks when she scored an emphatic win in the $100,000 Launceston Guineas over 2100 metres at Mowbray.

The John Blacker-trained grey filly settled just beyond midfield but when rider Siggy Carr called on the daughter of Glass Harmonium she unleashed a brilliant turn of foot and quickly had the race in her keeping when she burst clear in the home straight.

Glass Warrior went into the race on the back of an impressive maiden win on Devonport Cup day over 1650m and Blacker was confident his filly would emerge the winner.

“After this filly ran second on her home track at Longford I told the owners she would be hard to beat in the big staying races this season and tonight she’s kicked off with a Listed win,” Blacker said.

“We’ll nominate for both the Derby and the Strutt Stakes and see what comes from interstate for both of those races before we decide which one she’ll contest before going to the Oaks which will be her grand final."

Glass Warrior scored by five lengths from Fagin’s Touch with Tiesto a closing third.

The odds-on favourite Gee Gees Secondover finished fifth.
