2019 WIDDEN STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Widden Stakes is a Group 3 race for two year old fillies conducted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill.

The Widden Stakes was first run in 1943 and was won by Birthright. Occasionally it has been an open race but only for fillies in the last decade.

The Widden Stakes is run over 1100m under Set Weights And Penalties conditions. It is worth $160,000 in 2019. Originally a Listed race, it became a Group 3 from 2014 onwards.

The race is named after one of the famous studs Widden Stud.

The Widden Stakes has been variously run at Randwick, Rosehill and Warwick Farm. Has been at Rosehill since 2013.

A couple of recent Golden Slipper winners Mossfun and Overreach ran in the Widden Stakes.

Notable winners of the Widden Stakes include Denise’s Joy (1974), Shaybisc (1979), Biscarina (1982), Magic Flute (1985), Triscay (1989), Unison (1995), Miss Bussell (2000), Econsul (2004), Churchill Downs (2006), Horizons (2009), Driefontein (2012), Overreach (2013) and Mossfun (2014).

The 2018 Widden Stakes was won by Fiesta from Adamina and River Bird.
