2019 ANGUS ARMANASCO STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Angus Armanasco Stakes is a Group 2 race over 1400m for three-year-old fillies run at Caulfield by the Melbourne Racing Club.

The race was introduced in 1976 as the Tranquil Star Stakes and was run under that name until 1990. From 1991 to 1995 it carried other titles before it was named the Angus Armanasco Stakes in 1996 in honour of the late Australian Racing Hall of Fame trainer who prepared many champion horses at Caulfield in a career spanning more than 45 years.

The Angus Armanasco Stakes is run under Set Weights and Penalties conditions and was first run at 1600m when introduced in 1976.

It remained at that distance until 1984 when it was reduced to 1400m but reverted to 1600m from 1998 until 2010 when it again became a 1400m event.

The Angus Armanasco Stakes is run every year at Caulfield and is a feature of the Blue Diamond Stakes program in February. The race was run at Sandown in 1996 due to construction work at Caulfield.

The Angus Armanasco Stakes held Group 3 status from 1980 until 2000 when it was upgraded to Group 2.

The Angus Armanasco Stakes is worth $200,000 prizemoney in 2019.

The Angus Armanasco is a part of the Autumn program for three-year-old fillies in Melbourne and serves as a traditional lead into the G2 AV Kewney Stakes over 1600m at Flemington.

There have been six winners of the Angus Armanasco Stakes/Kewney Stakes double – Bravita (1980), Northwood Plume (1995), Elegant Fashion (2002), Special Harmony (2004), Ballet Society (2005) and Zarita (2008).

Other notable winners of the Angus Armanasco Stakes include Sonstone, Delightful Belle, Champagne, Rose O’War, Serenade Rose, Miss Finland, Set For Fame and Pinker Pinker.

The 2018 Angus Armanasco Stakes was won by Summer Sham from Palazzo Vecchio and Miss Wahoo.
