2019 NEWCASTLE NEWMARKET - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Newcastle Newmarket Handicap is Group 3 conducted at Broadmeadow racecourse by the Newcastle Jockey Club.

First run in 1955, the Newcastle Newmarket is run over 1400m and is the premier autumn race conducted by the Newcastle Jockey Club, attracting fields that often feature leading contenders for the Doncaster Mile at the Randwick autumn carnival.

The Newcastle Newmarket/Doncaster Mile double has been won twice by Secret Savings (1997) and Patezza (2005).

It has been held every year at Broadmeadow apart from 1987 (abandoned) and 2016 when it was transferred to Rosehill in Sydney after the Newcastle track surface was declared unsafe for racing.

The Newcastle Newmarket is run under quality handicap conditions with a maximum topweight of 62kg.

The Newcastle Newmarket was a Listed race from 1979-1991 and has been a Group 3 race since 1992.

There have been two dual winners of the Newcastle Newmarket – Brandy Lad (1964-65) and Manuan (1983-84).

The 2019 Newcastle Newmarket is worth prizemoney of $160,000.
