Canterbury League Club Stakes (G1)

Age: 3yo and up Type: OPEN

Classy sprinter Trapeze Artist improved on his first-up fourth in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill on February 2 to record his fourth Group 1 victory here. He began well and soon crossed to take the lead. He then set a smart tempo, held a clear advantage shortly after turning for home and was not threatened from that point to win impressively. Shoals was smartly away, settled in fourth place, got to second at the 200m and kept fighting on well to hold that position without troubling the winner. Prompt Response had a nice trip in third place on the rails and did well on holding on to take the minor placing, advancing significantly in class here. Cool Passion raced outside the leader and eventual winner and battled on nicely for (2.5 lengths) fourth. Pierata was last to the home turn and made late ground for (2.7 lengths) fifth, the three-year-old Brutal did well fighting on for (2.9 lengths) sixth while the favourite Kementari raced below his best at his first run back, just battling on in the straight after being in fifth place to finish (3 lengths) last in the seven-horse field.
