Reith Reunited With Sandbar At Randwick

3 minute read

Stablemates Sandbar and Za Zi Ba will spark a big family celebration if they can land a black type double at Randwick on Saturday for trainer Brad Widdup.

Widdup has booked his brother-in-law Christian Reith to ride the talented pair of sprinters.

Sandbar tackles the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) for three-year-olds where he will carry 58.5kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions while Za Zi Ba takes on her own sex in the G3 Wenona Girl Quality (1200m).

Sandbar has been a constant performer against some of the best of his age since his early 2YO days when he won the Listed Lonhro Plate at his second start.

He added the Listed Rosebud at Rosehill to his record at the start of this season while his Group and Listed placings include seconds in the G2 Pago Pago Stakes to Written By and the G2 Roman Consul Stakes to Sesar.

Reith rode Sandbar when he won the Lonhro Plate but hasn’t been aboard the Snitzel colt since he finished eighth in last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes.

Sandbar has been kept fresh by Widdup since he resumed with a close fourth in the G3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 9 but took the colt from his Hawkesbury stables to Randwick last Saturday for an exhibition gallop between races.

Za Zi Ba runs in the Wenona Girl Quality first-up after two recent barrier trials.

She hasn’t raced since finishing an excellent sixth to Divine Quality in the G3 Begonia Belle (1100m) at the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington last November.

A 4YO mare by All Too Hard, Za Zi Ba has won four of her 16 starts but needs a black type win to boost her stud value.

Reith has ridden Za Zi Ba in three of her four wins and was reunited with her in her two recent trials at Hawkesbury and Canterbury.

Another Hawkesbury-trained mare Spright, a luckless fifth in the G1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield on February 23, is topweight with 59kg for the Wenona Girl Quality.
