Bobbing Taking Wyong Path To Provincial Championship

3 minute read

Hawkesbury trainer Bernie Kelly may have to wait until the final qualifying heat of the Provincial Championships at Wyong on Saturday week to try to qualify his talented sprinter Bobbing for the $500,000 Final at Randwick on April 13.

Bobbing, whose eight starts to date have yielded four wins and three seconds, hasn’t raced since beating Newcastle pair Plaisir and High Power in the inaugural $150,000 Spring Provincial Series Final (1600m) at Kembla Grange on December 1.

Kelly intended to start the lightly-raced five-year-old in the second qualifier at Newcastle on March 9 but withdrew him on race morning because of a throat infection.

“I erred on the side of caution, and that has cleared up,” Kelly said.

“I nominated him for the Kembla Grange qualifier on Saturday but the wet weather might have beaten us to run him there.”

Kelly intended to trial Bobbing at Rosehill on Tuesday but the trials have been cancelled because of the rain.

“We’ve still got Wyong on Saturday week and Bobbing has raced well there previously,” Kelly said.

The gelding is unbeaten from two starts at Wyong in Class 1 and 2 Handicaps in September and October last year and both were over the same 1350m course as Saturday week’s final $150,000 Qualifier.

Bobbing trialled on his home track over 1000m on February 26 and finished second, splitting subsequent winners Ragazze and Meditate.
