Mighty mare Winx is within reach of becoming the world’s greatest ever stakeswinner, the ultimate accolade she can attain by winning her final career start at Randwick on April 13.

If Winx ends her illustrious career with a win in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes she will top the all-time world prizemoney list and enshrine her place in racing history as the greatest of the great.

The amazing mare began her current campaign in second place on the recognised worldwide list of all-time money earners.

By extending her record-breaking winning sequence to 32 successive wins she is now poised to overtake US champion Arrogate and claim the esteemed title of the world’s greatest prizewinner before she retires.

When Winx recorded her 32nd successive win and 24th in a Group One race in the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday her career earnings from her 36 wins and three placings in 42 starts climbed to $A24,016,674 (Source: Racing Australia).

Her prizemoney has now surpassed every Japanese and European champion and leaves only Arrogate ahead of her on the global prizemoney list.

Arrogate, who raced only 11 times for seven wins, retired in 2017 with earnings of $US17,422,600, the majority coming from his wins in the Dubai World Cup and Pegasus World Cup.

For the purpose of a uniform world prizemoney list the domestic currency earnings of all horses are converted to GB pounds as the list was originally compiled by the International Racing Bureau using currency exchange rates issued by the British Horseracing Authority in the first week of every January.

Arrogate’s earnings converted to £13,622,542 while Winx’s Australian earnings after last Saturday’s win in the George Ryder Stakes convert to £13,219,716 (Source: Racing Post) even though the Australian dollar has been at its lowest exchange rate in 10 years.

If Winx wins the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 13 she will add another $2.320 million to her career earnings for a final tally of $26,336,674.

On current exchange rates that converts to £14,116,457, some 500,000 pounds in advance of Arrogate.

Winx has forged ahead of the Japanese champions Gentildonna and Orfevre on the global prizemoney list.

Japan’s greatest mare Gentildonna – who retired as a 5YO at the end of 2014 with a career record of 10 wins and five placings from her 19 starts - sits third with converted earnings of £12,285,608.

Orfevre, who retired in 2013 as a 5YO with a career record of 12 wins and six placings from 21 starts, finished with converted earnings of £12,275,482.

Any list of global leading money-earners depends on the currency criteria. Currency conversion rates a decade ago would tell a different story and would probably have put Winx ahead of Arrogate at an earlier date. The criteria also makes no allowance for inflation.
