Using that Tulloch Lodge bone and muscle, Taikomochi battled bravely to take the 2019 Neville Sellwood Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.
Taikomochi has been racing well without winning and this was a step up in company.

Winning Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott (Adrian interviewed)
On the winner: “Very fit horse and that’s what you need today on this testing track. I thought going into Canberra he was open to plenty of improvement coming out of that run and it was an excellent race in the cup, the form coming out of the race has stood up well. We thought coming here today he was in with a live chance as an improver.
On the ride: “Sam was able to rate him beautifully and that may have been the difference in the end. He was beautiful and relaxed, got some lovely sectionals throughout. He was able to quicken when he need to and that was probably the difference in the end for us.“
Winning Jockey: Sam Clipperton
On the win: “Typical Gai Waterhouse fashion. Gai and Adrian have these horses very fit, as we saw in the first race. This horse was a bit of a query in the ground and at the trip but he was well prepared. Got out in front and got some cheap sectionals, built nicely from the 600m. Fought on strong so very satisfying.”
“It was a good strong, tough win. When the field fell away it added to my confidence as he was probably a bit suspect at this grade. He ran a good second in the Canberra Cup last start so he definitely deserved his place here. Once I found the front I was always confident. He just needed to run out the trip. He led and kept kicking. It is very satisfying to get a big win on a big day.”
Beaten Jockeys:
Jack Martin (Moss 'N' Dale): “I just think he’s not himself. At his best today I thought he’d be well in it but he wasn’t.”
Brenton Avdulla (Libran): “He ran well. I tried to help him as much as I could through the ground, we all know he doesn’t like it heavy. The winner was just too good on that ground.”
Blake Shinn (Goathland): “Unlucky. We were third the rail and couldn’t get out. I’m not saying (with luck) he wins but he goes very close.”
James McDonald (Main Stage): “He went okay. Perhaps just one run away.”
Andrew Adkins (All Too Soon): “They just went too slow for her. On the back up on an a heavy track again she just couldn’t sprint when they let rip.”
