Dig Deep Delivers Pearce Stable's Biggest Win in Karrakatta Plate

3 minute read

Lightly-raced gelding Dig Deep gave training partners Daniel and Ben Pearce their biggest success with his win in the Group 2 Amelia Park Karrakatta Plate at Ascot on Saturday.

A veteran of just two starts, Dig Deep ($19) was given a gun ride by Jarrad Noske and surged between runners in the straight to score an upset win.

Outsider Tinsnip ($81) looked the winner until Dig Deep surged and had to settle for second with Miss West Coast ($12) third.

A winner of a Bunbury maiden on debut, the son of Deep Field had worked home well for fourth in the Perth Stakes in the lead up to the Karrakatta after a slow start

Improving his manners had been a focus of Team Pearce since and those efforts paid off.

"We put a bit of work into thinking about how we were going to get the final touches on him and rectify the mistakes he made in the Perth Stakes," co-trainer Daniel Pearce said.

"We're obviously really happy with the result."

He said the Karrakatta win was the biggest in the pair's career and was a special moment for all connections.

"This is something we've dreamed of and since our partnership we've really wanted to get a feature race win. We've done it today."

Pearce said while the stable had confidence in the horse's talent, his lack of experience was a concern.

"We knew he had a lot of ability but I would have liked to have seen him have another couple of starts in his first prep and come here a little bit more furnished but we got the job done."

Favourite Jericho Missile was under pressure a long way from home and weakened in the straight to finish tenth, almost five lengths from the winner.

Once he saw daylight Dig Deep clawed his way into the lead at the 50m then thrust his neck forward for a surprise win here, his second in three starts. He settled in behind the early charge for position and sat one off the fence in fifth. Stuck in traffic rounding into the home straight a gap closed as he straightened but inside the 200m he moved out a lane and went after the leaders. He took a few strides to balance then accelerated quickly from the 100m, levelled up to the leaders at the 50m and thrust his neck out just short of the line. Tinsnip was midfield at the 600m, rounded into the straight very wide and when balanced ran home very well to be a neck back in second. Miss West Coast was four wide turning in, challenged and grabbed the lead at the 100m but was swamped the last 50m from pacemaker Amelia's On Fire, who was caught at the 100m then held on for fourth.
