Tricky affair with a number of differing form-lines converging, coupled with little speed on paper.

ZOURKHAN (10) returned with a bang last start when his fitness just told late. Back better than ever and is expected to improve further racing second up. Very well placed down in the weights and like the fact he has been kept fresh (28 days). Hard to beat.

ARCHEDEMUS (11) didn't have a lot of room in the Provincial Championships Final, but was still disappointing. Gets his chance to lead here if they want to.

TOM MELBOURNE (2) was on the improve last start and if able to run up to that form again, he has to be respected. Stablemate KAONIC (4) next best.

Progressive Gwenda Markwell-trained gelding Archedemus took his record to six wins from nine starts in scoring his first stakes victory here. He began well and soon went forward to take the lead. He then travelled well at a good tempo under Corey Brown, got a break on straightening and then fought back gamely when challenged to win well. Tom Melbourne settled behind the leader and eventual winner, moved up to challenge halfway down the straight and then battled on well for second after conceding 6kg to the winner. Sixties Grove settled in sixth place, between runners, switched into clear running on turning for home and then ran on nicely for third in a promising effort on his return. New Universe raced in eighth place and made late ground when clear for fourth, beaten four lengths.
