2019 NORTHAM STAKES – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Super Maxi and Captain Stirling can make the speed. ROCK MAGIC (1) franked his ability last campaign at Group 1 level in Melbourne and spelled after a dominant win in the Roma Cup at Ascot when he ran a big peak. Has been away for a year, but impressed in a recent Lark Hill trial. The 9x winning rider sticks from that and he can win if sufficiently forward.

FIRST AMONG EQUALS (2) resumes and has performed at Group level in Melbourne. He gets the rail and has won four times fresh. He’s right up to this.

ELECTRIC LIGHT (10) missed a lip second-up at Ascot on an Open FM and then disappointed at Listed level the same sex and venue. Comes in at the bottom of the weights with 6x winning rider Pike getting back on and can surprise. DURENDAL (3) resumes and is a genuine chance if ready. He’s trialled and keep very safe.

Form Preview

Well performed nine-year-old Rock Magic, having his first start for 12 months, showed his class in winning here, his 16th win and his ninth at stakes level. He began well but was caught deep in sixth place before improving at the home turn. He challenged halfway down the straight, hit the front shortly afterwards and then fought back gamely under his top weight (58.5 kg) to win well. Electric Light, the only mare in the field, settled near the tail of the ten-horse field, looked for a run between runners on straightening, got a late split and then finished quickly for second in a smart effort. Durandal, a stablemate of the winner, had a nice trip in third place, challenged at the 200m and then battled strongly for a close-up third.
