There will be no rest for Hawkesbury’s pocket rocket Spright with trainer Garry Frazer keen to see her add at least one more Group One win to her record before the end of the season.

Spright ended a 20-year Group 1 drought for Frazer when she overpowered her rivals to record a deserving first major victory in Saturday’s $600,000 TAB Classic at Morphettville.

It was the fourth G1 win of Frazer’s long training career but his first since Quick Star won the Champagne Stakes at Randwick in 1999.

His earlier G1 triumphs were the 1995 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm and George Main Stakes at Randwick with Turridu Turridu.

Quick Star’s rider Damien Oliver also partnered Spright on Saturday, giving he champion jockey the 117th G1 win of his career and 113 in Australia.

Frazer does not have a big team in work with Spright’s Adelaide victory only the second win for his stable in 2018-19, the first being with Sweet Fella at Bathurst in September.

But Spright’s consistency in big races has kept the stable flag flying with her G1 breakthrough at Morphettville boosting her earnings this season to $630,170 and more than $1.268 million in total – with more to come!

She is remaining in Adelaide to chase another G1 win on Saturday week in the $750,000 Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville where the set weights and penalties conditions will see her carry 56.5kg, the same handicap she carried against her own sex in the TAB Classic.

From there Frazer has his sights on Brisbane where he has nominated the mare for the $1.5 milion Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 8 and $500,000 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) against her own sex at the same track on June 22.

And next season she could be contesting the richest turf race in the world as her G1 performances will no doubt attract interest from slot owners for the $14 million Everest (1200m) at Randwick in October and delay retirement plans.

“The original plan was to retire her to stud at the end of this season and mate her with either Zoustar or I Am Invincible,” Frazer said.

“But now we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

Frazer was specific in deflecting much of the credit for Spright’s G1 success to his 26-year-old son Jordan after Saturday’s win.

“It was a bigger thrill than the other three Group One wins because Jordan was with me,” Frazer said.

“He rides Spright work and has travelled everywhere (Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide) with her.

“He travelled with Spright to Melbourne and stopped over there for two days before arriving in Adelaide with her last Friday week.

“He is very knowledgeable and a good judge, and would make a great trainer but I hope he doesn’t go that way. It’s a very hard game.”

Spright’s record stands at six wins and nine placings from 29 starts with 24 of her career runs being in Group or Listed races.

“She is a remarkable mare, and can produce an unbelievable sprint when she gets a race run to suit,” Frazer said. “She certainly deserved that Group 1.”
