On Friday Currie advised stable clients that Cavanough would be taking over as their new “stable trainer” and followed up on Saturday by submitting a formal application to QRIC stewards for horses in his care to be transferred to the former Queenslander.

However somewhere in between there was a breakdown in negotiations with Cavanough.

On Sunday Cavanough contacted QRIC chief steward Peter Chadwick to inform him that he would not be moving to Toowoomba or taking over the training of members of Currie’s racing team.

It is understood Cavanough has preferred to stay in NSW to concentrate on his own large team of horses at Scone.

Cavanough set up his Scone stable two years ago after previously dominating racing in the southern districts of NSW for more than a decade while based in Albury.

Currie is fighting for his career after more than 12 months of prolonged investigations into his stable operations, horse treatments and training methods.

Last week he was temporarily blocked from racing his horses in Queensland after racing authorities invoked AR55 to refuse his nominations for meetings on May 3 and 4.

Racing Queensland has not made any decision about future nominations by Currie. In a statement RQ said they will be considered at the relevant time in the circumstances that prevail.

Despite that statement the action taken by RQ will be challenged by Currie this week in the Supreme Court.

Currie also has to face a sentencing hearing before stewards after he was found guilty of two charges under AR175(a) on Friday. He will make submissions to stewards on Tuesday.

R55 states: “All nominations are subject to the approval of a PRA (Principal Racing Authority) or stewards. Either may decline to receive or after receiving reject any nomination in their absolute discretion and without giving reasons for so doing.”
