2019 NATIONAL STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The National Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-olds conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville in Adelaide.

The National Stakes is run over 1200m under set weight conditions and is a feature of the Goodwood Handicap program during the SAJC autumn carnival.

Known as the National Stakes from 1985-1993 and from 1994 to 2012 under a variety of sponsorship names. It reverted to the National Stakes in 2013.

The National Stakes was a Listed race in 1985 and 1986 and has been Group 3 since 1987.

The 2019 National Stakes will be run for prizemoney of $150,000.

Notable winners of the National Stakes include Seiger, Kaapstad, Pride Of Ingenue, Dancer’s Choice, Jakpil, Mookta, Will Fly, La Baraka, Super Elegant, Great Is Great, Majestic Music, Toorak Toff, Moonovermanhattan and I Am A Star.

Colin Hayes and Leon Macdonald shares the National Stakes training record with three wins each.

The 2018 National Stakes was won by Marcel From Madrid from Aristia and Tequila Time.
