Black Caviar won it for fun in 2012. Other big names join her as a winner and The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday might see another top performance.

2019 The Goodwood: Nominations

2019 THE GOODWOOD - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Goodwood is a Group 1 race for open class horses conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville.

The Goodwood was first run in 1881 and was won by D.O.D.

The Goodwood is run over 1200m under Set Weights and Penalties conditions.

The girls won four on the trot from 2010 to 2013.

In the last 16 years only two winners haven’t been trained in Victoria – Let Go Thommo and Takeover Target.

Editions over the last 20 years have been great for newcomers at the time to the G1 ranks for jockeys - M Pegus, B Park, A Spiteri, D Holland, M Carson, D Taggart, J Holder.

With the dog leg start like the Caulfield 1200m, barriers aren’t as important.

In 2017 Lindsay Park got an ex-Perth horse Vega Magic to fly first up and win. He’d come back in the Spring and take out the Memsie Stakes at G1 before starting favourite in the inaugural running of The Everest where he was second.

A year on Santa Ana Lane, already a G1 winner, won the Goodwood then the Stradbroke then in the Spring was hard in the betting in the Everest. He backed it up by winning the VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington and then the TJ Smith at Randwick in the Autumn.

In 2019, the Goodwood is worth $750,000.

Notable winners of the Goodwood include Aurie’s Star (1940), Romantic Dream (1977), Boardwalk Angel (1989), Euclase (1992), Bomber Bill (2003), Takeover Target (2009), Black Caviar (2012), Black Heart Bart (2016), Vega Magic (2017) and Santa Ana Lane (2018).

The 2018 Goodwood was won by Santa Ana Lane from Missrock and I’ll Have A Bit.
