Goodwood Draw No Concern For Spright

Hawkesbury trainer Garry Frazer is hoping it’s a case of Group 1 déjà vu for his top mare Spright at Morphettville on Saturday.

Spright is seeking back to back victories at racing’s elite level in the $750,000 The Goodwood (1200m) after clinching her breakthrough G1 win at the same track and over the same distance on May 4 in the $600,000 TAB Classi

Just as she did two weeks ago Spright has again drawn the outside barrier (16) but Frazer isn’t perturbed.

“I wasn’t worried when she drew wide in the TAB Classic, and I’m feeling the same for this race,” he said.

“In fact, I think it suits her. Damien Oliver will be able to let her find her feet and then get to the outside again on straightening.”

The Goodwood is run under set weights plus penalties. Spright has equal topweight with 56.5kg, the same weight she carried when unleashing a powerful burst to trounce her own sex in the TAB Classic.

Frazer’s son Jordan has remained in Adelaide looking after Spright, and has given his father a confidence booster in the lead-up to Saturday’s assignment.

“Jordan rode the mare this morning, and was really happy with how she galloped,” he said.

“He rides Spright in nearly all her work and knows her very well.”

Spright can lift her earnings to nearly $1.75 million if successful in The Goodwood, and increase her chances of gaining a slot in the $14 million Everest (1200m) at Randwick in October.

Despatch is building an impressive record with seven wins in 11 starts including four stakes, this being his first Group 1, and is unbeaten in four starts this preparation. He co-led early then took over alone to set the pace from the 1000m. Going comfortably around the corner and approaching the straight he was up by a length, sped clear by two at the 300m and tried to slip them. That plan saw him increase the lead slightly but inside the 100m the challenges were on but he rallied well then held on grimly by a neck at the post. Behemoth was midfield, locked away on the rails from the 600m, was blocked until the 100m then flew between runners very late to get up for an unlucky second. Spright put up a nice effort. Third last (rails) turning in, she hugged the fence all the way up the straight, accelerated into second but was swamped by Behemoth very late, while Hard Empire was handy enough at the 300m but kept on well to the line for fourth.
