Frazer Considers Brisbane Options For Spright

Hawkesbury’s star sprinter Spright may get another chance to record a second Group 1 win before the end of this racing season.

Nothing went right for Spright when a courageous third in last Saturday’s G1 Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

She is now in Melbourne en route to her trainer Gary Frazer’s Hawkesbury stables.

“She appears to have come through the race okay, and will be home on Wednesday morning,” Frazer said.

“I will give her a week in the paddock and then decide what to do. We still might go to Brisbane with her.”

Frazer has entered Spright for the $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 8.

Frazer also his eyes on another G1 feature at that track, especially as it is against her own sex.

That is the $500,000 Tattersall’s Tiara for fillies and mares run a fortnight after the Stradbroke under weight-for-age conditions.

Spright has raced only three times at 1400m, all as a three-year-old in 2017.

She was eighth in the G2 Surround Stakes at Randwick on a heavy track, eighth in the G3 Hawkesbury Guineas and a close third the Scone Guineas.

Frazer rues the bad luck Spright encountered behind the barrier prior to the start of The Goodwood last Saturday.

“She looked magnificent parading, but kicked a fence at the start and lost her near hind plate and had to be reshod,” he said.

“It’s never happened with her before. Spright then underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.”

Due to the delay the stewards decided to avoid a clash with a race at Rosehill, resulting in The Goodwood eventually being run 16 minutes after the scheduled starting time.

Spright settled well back as normal but an inpsired ride by Damien Oliver to save ground by staying near the inside rail almost paid off she she saved valuable ground from the 500m to the 200m.

When Oliver won the G1 TAB Classic over the same course at Morphettville a fortnight earlier he brought Spright to the outside and she unleashed a brilliant burst to overpower her rivals.

The five-year-old has recorded three G1 placings along with her TAB Classic success this season, taking her earnings to $1,328,095.
