Humidor Begins Spring Preparation

3 minute read

Humidor, the former Darren Weir-trained Group One winner, is on the way back to racing from injury.

Humidor, a rising 7YO, will soon be heading to his new trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace after undergoing prep work at Warrnambool with former Perth trainer Lindsey Smith.

Smith, who has taken over Weir's old stables at Warrnambool following his move from WA to Victoria, has steered the 2017 Cox Plate runner-up through his rehabilitation from a suspensory injury suffered last spring.

Humidor, who has earned $3.967 million from eight wins and nine placings in 32 starts, hasn’t raced since he finished third to Winx in her fourth Cox Plate win last October

“He’s in his old box and making good progress,” Smith reported. "The horse is well and he’s about two weeks off doing some fast work.

‘He’s been to the beach and on the treadmill and is going well so hopefully he comes back.”

Smith also has his G1 winner Scales Of Justice in work at Warrnambool and will soon add the G1 winning sprinter Malaguerra to his team after he completes pre-training in WA.

Meanwhile retirement looms for Caulfield Cup winner Boom Time should he not return to form at Caulfield this Saturday.

Lindsay Park co-trainer David Hayes said that the 7YO would need to show improvement over 2000m on Saturday if he is to continue racing.

"It’s his grand final," Hayes said. "If he doesn’t fire, we’ll most probably retire him."

"His trackwork suggests he can run well but his recent form is atrocious.

“He’s a rising eight-year-old stallion so maybe he’s looking to do other things."

On a positive note the last start Prix De L'Arc Triomphe starter Neufbosc has begun preparing for a Caulfield and Melbourne Cup campaign at Lindsay Park.

The imported multiple French stakes-winner was purchased by agent Mark Pilkington on behalf of stable clients including Seymour Bloodstock.

Hayes also has the former Aidan O'Brien-trained stayer Rostropovich on his books.

The son of Frankel has undergone his spring pre-training in New Zealand because of quarantine restrictions after racing in Hong Kong in December.
