2019 QUEENSLAND DERBY – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Fun Fact led throughout last start so should adopt similar tactics. The filly SCARLET DREAM (16) looks a big hope to beat the boys. She ran on well for second over this distance in the Group 1 Australian Oaks then found 2000m too short last time but still closed well. The return to this distance suits and she is close to a win.

MR QUICKIE (2) got a long way back but made good ground late when third in the Group 1 South Australian Derby. Racing very consistently and sure to be strong at the business end. NOBU (6) has put it all together now and made it back to back Sydney wins when scoring at Randwick last time. Has been hitting the line hard so should relish this distance.

RE EDIT (17) was brave when third at weight for age last week. Should be competitive against the boys. Post-to-post Grand Prix winner FUN FACT (3) could give a sight again if allowed to dictate.

Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie followed up on his unlucky third in the SA Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on May 11 to take out this Group 1 three-year-old feature in good style, his ninth win from 13 starts. He settled in tenth place, was shuffled back a bit at the 800m before John Allen improved his position (between runners) at the 600m. He got a split at the 300m, hit the front at the 200m and then fought strongly to win well. Vow And Declare raced in seventh place, improved well from the 700m, challenged nearing the 100m and then fought well for second. Aliferous settled near last in the 18-horse field. She went deep rounding the home turn and then kept running on well for third, staging a solid effort. Nobu also settled well back. He was 16th in the mid-stages, tracked up deep (with cover) from the 600m, put in a run to be in a challenging position at the 200m and then battled on well for (2.7 lengths) fourth. Carif raced in sixth place, made a quick (wide) move approaching the home turn, hit the front on straightening and then battled on quite well for fifth, beaten four lengths.
