Racing Queensland has entered into a three-year agreement with the Queensland Jockeys’ Association to increase the base riding fee.

Having agreed to an 11% increase last year, RQ will double down on their commitment over the next term, with the base riding fee rising by $40 per ride between 2018 and 2021.

In addition, RQ will also lift the maximum weekly benefit applicable under the workers’ compensation insurance policy over the term of the agreement.

The increase comes after the Queensland Government announced an extra $18 million prize money increase for local racing at all levels and the payment of prizemoney down to 10th place at TAB meetings.

“The agreement is the culmination of a positive and collaborative approach to negotiations between Racing Queensland and the QJA,” said RQ chief operating officer Adam Wallish.

“Not only does it provide certainty and surety to both parties over the next three years, it acknowledges the outstanding service provided by our jockeys across the state on a weekly basis.

RQ has delivered a raft of positive initiatives including $18 million in additional prize money – a further $8 million was announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk at the weekend – as well as the introduction of prize money distribution down to 10th at TAB meetings.

QJA President Glen Prentice welcomed the agreement on behalf of Queensland’s 210 registered jockeys.

“The QJA appreciated Racing Queensland’s positive approach to the negotiations,” he said.

“We believe the outcomes to be fair and reasonable and our members look forward to continuing their contribution to the resurgence of racing here in Queensland.”
