Lees Doubles Up In Tatts Tiara

3 minute read

Trainer Kris Lees is planning to increase his representation in Saturday's $500,000 Tatts Tiara at Eagle Farm.

Lees is leaning toward backing up Pecans to join Princess Posh in Saturday's final Group One race of the season.

Lees said Pecans had come through the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich last Saturday without any problems and is a likely runner.

"At this stage, I'll probably back her up," he said.

"Pecans didn't settle in too well when she first arrived at the Gold Coast and that's why I didn't run her the first time in Brisbane.

"I didn't think her run was too bad at Ipswich. She finished fifth after racing three wide with 59kg."

Lees is confident there won't be any problem about Princess Posh (Larry Cassidy) being given the "green light" to contest the Tiara.

Stewards, acting on veterinary advice, withdrew the mare from the G1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 8 when the horses were parading in the enclosure.

"I think the stewards are pretty comfortable with her now," Lees said. "She galloped between races at Doomben last Wednesday, and her work at the Gold Coast has been terrific."

Princess Posh, runner-up to The Bostonian in the G1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 25, is sixth in order of ballot for the Tiara in a maximum field of 18 whilst Pecans (currently 19th) will also make the field.
