RANDWICK July 12

Heavy 8; Randwick Inside Grass/Polytrack

18 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 6 x 1050m (1 Open; 4 2YO; 1 Maiden); 9 x 735m (1 Open; 7 2YO; 1 Maiden); Polytrack 2 x 780m (1 2YO; 1 Open)

MANDELA (Peter and Paul Snowden): Trial star cost himself a win on debut at Canterbury with his erratic behaviour, resulting in him having to trial again to appease the stewards. He was given a serious test in his 1050m heat, sitting behind the pace, taking a split at the 200m and then given a real sound out over the last 100m. He burst away to win by almost four lengths and while the overall time was slow (1.05.10; 36.30) his acceleration was another example of his obvious talent.

BULL MARKET (Peter and Paul Snowden): Handy sprinter looks set for a big first-up effort after an impressive second in the open heat over 735m won by the pacy Hibiscus Lady in quick time (44.20; 34.10). Ridden with no urgency early, he was five lengths off the lead at the 400m and then pulled Tommy Berry to the line as he easily took ground off the winner without being pressured. His strong trial suggests he has pleased the stable in his work leading up to his return.

COCO CRUISER (David Pfieffer): Rubick colt having his first trial showed abundant natural pace to lead easily and showed no signs of stopping to run out a soft four lengths winner over 735m in good time (44.37; 34.40) with something in hand. This kind of speed will make him very competitive in a suitable short dash for his age group.

TIME TO REIGN (Gary Portelli): Class act stood out in a strong heat in his first appearance since his fine fifth in the Golden Slipper. He did it much easier than his rivals finishing a close second in the fastest 735m trial (44.17; 34.10) and would have won if given a late squeeze. He is in good order and the form around him in this heat looks strong with some nice efforts from Yao Dash, Fiery Red and Camp Rifle.

WARWICK FARM July 8

Synthetic Polytrack

15 Heats – 1 x 1175m (Open); 13 x 740m (2 Open; 6 2YO; 2 3YO Open; 3 Maiden)

This set was transferred to the Polytrack due to the heavy condition of the grass tracks.

Synthetic trials are notoriously unreliable as a worthy guide. That said you can only assess them on what you see and take note of comparable times and sectionals to identify worthwhile efforts.

Those that did enough to warrant inclusion as noted performances in the open heats were GRESHAM; HOOF HUSSLER; NINES ENOUGH; YOU MAKE ME SMILE and DON'T LEAVE ME OUT.

Among the 2YOs the better efforts came SHE'S SMART; FULMINA; STEEL DIAMOND; WANDONNA; YOUNG HEART and PANDEMIC. In the 3YO and maiden heats we liked the trials of MOSUO; MAROCH; NATURE; SETHLANS and CANYONERO.
