The Melbourne Mail : Flemington - 20th July 2019

3 minute read

It's very much off-season fare at Flemington on Saturday but it is a good betting card with plenty of chances and angles in each of nine races.

Our bet of the day comes up in the fourth race on the card, a staying contest where Lord Belvedere interests us coming down from Sydney where he closed strongly over 1800m last time.

He gets up to this trip quickly, and his set up might no be ideal, but his effort last time was against much better horses than what he tackles on Saturday and his form in the UK says that he stays the trip well.

The talent gap between milers and 2500m horses is vast, particularly in Australia and particularly in the off season. That leaves Lord Belvedere's last start effort looking very strong indeed and the gap is big enough to offset our concerns about the set up. We are happy to bet.

Our each way play comes up in the seventh where Sylvia's Mother is currently much more popular than her stablemate Tell Me

Sylvia's Mother is undoubtedly talented, but the market has loved her above and beyond her ratings to this point, and while things didn't work out for her last time they haven't been falling the way of Tell Me either.

They may not again, barrier one is not typically seen as ideal down the straight, but the perception goes beyond the facts with that one and with even luck here Tell Me can give this a shake. She's worth having on side at double figure quotes.
