2019 MEMSIE STAKES – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Cliff's Edge goes forward from a low draw and Begood Toya Mother presses on from out wide. Scales Of Justice, Fundamentalist, Hartnell and Despatch all poke up and that should ensure a strong tempo.

SCALES OF JUSTICE (5) was turned over at short odds in Adelaide last time but the winner there is very promising and he may have raced a touch flat off the big first up win around here in the Bletchingly. That win was terrific and gives him a great look here. Think the race sets up well for him.

ALIZEE (11) got the job done first up in Sydney and won the Futurity around here back in the autumn. Star mare with obvious claims. CLIFF'S EDGE (6) forced a good one to work to run him down in the Lawrence and has to be a hope off that formline along with the old-timer HARTNELL (1). BEGOOD TOYA MOTHER (9) is right up in class but he's rapidly improving and must be respected.

The 2016 Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m winner at Ascot, Scales Of Justice, staged a very good effort in winning here, his second Group 1 victory in 26 starts to date. Having his third run this preparation, he settled in fifth place, one off the rails, behind a good pace. He moved up nicely rounding the home turn, took the lead nearing the 100m and then went on to win impressively. So Si Bon had a good trip in eighth place, tracked the winner coming to the home turn and then kept fighting on very well to take second. The favourite Alizee settled back in second last place in the 13-horse field from her wide barrier (11). She was widest of all at the home turn, made a strong run and briefly looked a threat at the 100m before fighting on for third, her barrier proving costly. Hartnell had a nice trip in seventh place on the rails, got through on the inner at the home turn and kept battling on well in the straight for (1.3 lengths) fourth. Despatch was second until halfway down the straight and did well in holding on for (2.8 lengths) fifth with Begood Toya Mother (2.9 lengths) sixth after running a bold race in the lead in a good effort, advancing in class here.
