Waugh Wants Her First Wyong Gold Cup

3 minute read

Wyong's leading trainer Kim Waugh is taking a calculated gamble in a bid to win her first Wyong Gold Cup on her home track on Friday.

Waugh has set her talented but difficult to train import Our Century for a first-up win in the $160,000 Listed event over 2100m at his first start for eight months.

The Irish-bred son of Montjeu, an 8YO to northern hemisphere time, has raced only 19 times due to recurring fitness issues but in the past has shown he can successfully rise to the challenge of winning first-up over testing distances.

Despite his age he won over 1900m at Rosehill first-up from a spell last November after several sterling barrier trials before going on to finish second in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill and win the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) at Randwick.

In earlier preparations Our Century won his first start over a mile as a 2YO in Ireland and also posted a first-up third in the G3 Bendigo Cup over 2400m in 2016 when trained in Victoria by Robert Hickmott for Lloyd Williams.

Our Century has notched six wins and five placings in his 18 starts, a great record considering his record shows he has never been able to stay in training for more than three starts in each preparation due to his recurring problems.

Waugh prepared Our Century for his first-up win last November through several sterling barrier trials and has applied the same strategy in preparing the gelding for the Wyong Cup.

He has had five trials since May including three since late July and Waugh is confident he has the fitness to run out a strong 2100m.

"He's going great and I couldn't be happier with him," Waugh said. "I was pleased with his trials and he'll be ready to go in the Cup"

"He's had a lot of issues but If he runs well we will press on to the Newcastle Cup and a few others. There are a number of options we can take with him."

Jason Collett rode Our Century in his three starts last season and has been recalled for the Wyong Cup mount even though he hasn't ridden the stayer in any of his lead-up trials.

The downside for Our Century is a wide barrier. He is going to need a clever ride from Collett to overcome one gate from the outside in the capacity field of 16.

Waugh has had only one previous Wyong Cup starter – a seventh with Delago Star in 2011 - since she re-located her stable from Rosehill to the central coast track 10 years ago following her 2005 marriage to Australian cricket great Mark Waugh.

Mark Waugh, a director of Wyong Race Club, is a part-owner of Our Century and is immensely proud of his wife's achievements in a training career that began almost 30 years ago after making her name in harness racing.

She has shown an adept talent with stayers, her Group and Listed wins including the G1 Sydney Cup, G2 O'Shea Stakes and G3 Manion Cup with Mahtoum,  a Listed Grafton Cup with Catapult, the Listed Lord Mayor's Cup and Listed Christmas Cup with Our Century and Listed Tatteralls Club Stakes with Spinning Con.

Waugh is also training the classy import Goathland, who was twice placed in Group races last season. He was also set for a first-up tilt at the Wyong Cup after winning three recent barrier trials but his spring program is now on hold after a temperature set back his preparation.

The in-form Chris Waller-trained gelding Wu Gok is now the winner of four of his last five starts. He was given a good trip by James McDonald racing in fourth place before moving up and putting pressure on the leaders approaching the 600m. He got to the front on turning for home and then went on to win well in a solid staying performance. Hush Writer worked in the early stages from a wide barrier before racing outside the leader (Stampede). He was pressured nearing the home turn and then fought on well to hold second in a photo after working most of the way. Vaucluse Bay raced in sixth place, was under riding coming to the home turn but kept responding in the straight, battling on well to take third.
