2019 CHELMSFORD STAKES – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Another key highlight with this year's Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes. Not a lot of obvious speed on paper, Samadoubt should lead fairly comfortably again.

AVILIUS (1) hit the line well enough first up and is sure to appreciate the step up to the mile. Very well treated under the WFA conditions and while likely to get back again, he should prove very strong late. Although he is still likely to still be short of his best, he still should be too good.

UNFORGOTTEN (12) returned in good order last start and much like Avilius she should have good improvement leading into this. Won this race last year and has to be respected.

SAMADOUBT (2) was too good on-speed when leading throughout in the Winx Stakes. Looks to get similar favours here and should take some catching, while CON TE PARTIRO (14) is another improver.

Form Preview

Samadoubt showed his surprise win in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at this track on August 24 was certainly no fluke victory with another very good all the way win here. He took a while to cross from his outside barrier (14) and he then steadied the tempo, grabbed a break on straightening and then went on to score decisively by just over three lengths. The favourite Avilius settled back in ninth place and deep from a wide barrier (10). He commenced a move from the 600m, went to third at the 300m and continued to battle on well to take second in a sound second-up effort. Girl Tuesday raced in seventh place to the home turn and then ran on very well for third. Haripour was a handy fifth rounding the home turn and did well on holding on for (3.5 lengths) fourth, resuming here. Finche showed good early pace and after being third to the home turn, he held on soundly for (4.3 lengths) fifth in his first start since fourth in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in November.
