Brisbane Best: Eagle Farm - 7th September 2019

3 minute read

Progressive sprinter Scallopini looks well placed to make a winning return at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The lightly-raced Steven O'Dea five-year-old is nicely drawn in gate two for the Ums School Wear Open Handicap over 1200m.

Scallopini makes his return after a short but impressive campaign when he scored two wins and ran a very close second in just three starts, all at this course.

Importantly he won first up that preparation over this distance and after a strong recent trial – where he went to the line with plenty in hand - he should be primed for a repeat performance.

Scallopini's record at this distance is encouraging and jockey Matthew McGillivray is on board having won his only previous ride on the gelding.

Last-start winner The Tenor is on the up and has the ratings to feature at each way odds in the Ascot Plumbing C6 Handicap over 1000m.

Formerly trained in Newcastle by Kris Lees, the lightly-raced four-year-old has done a good job in two runs since joining the Kelly Schweida yard.

First up he led and kicked on well to only go down by a neck then last start he fought strongly when scoring a win at this course.

He drops back 200m in trip but had three weeks off and is proven at 1000m.

A wide gate could cause some headaches for jockey Mark Du Plessis but The Tenor does have the gate speed to work across the field so if he can slot in and have some luck he is an each way prospect.
