Strong Canberra Choices For The Kosciuszko

3 minute read

It didn't take long for Kosciuszko sweep winners to decide they wanted Canberra based runners as their representatives in the $1.3 million feature at Randwick on October 19.

Those lucky enough to draw one of the 14 winning tickets were able to select a country NSW or ACT-trained horse to be their representative in the Kosciuszko after negotiating the prizemoney split.

Under a new rule introduced this year for the second running ACT stables are allowed a maximum of two runners.

Less than 48 hours after winners were announced the two ACT slots were taken by sweep winners.

The Keith Dryden trained Handle The Truth will run for a punter club syndicate based at Shellharbour south of Wollongong.

The four-year-old gelding impressed in a trial at Thoroughbred Park in Canberra last Friday, beating the Queanbeyan-trained Kosciuszko entry Noble Boy by five lengths.

"We had a couple enquiries and we've gone with a punters club based in Shellharbour," Dryden said.

The other Canberra runner is yet to be determined after a deal was struck between trainer Matthew Dale and long-time stable supporter Rod Thompson.

Thompson who drew a winning ticket, will be represented by a yet to be determined Dale-trained horse.

"Fell Swoop would have been number one had he fired last Saturday in Melbourne," Dale said.

"Notation is another but after her fourth in the Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong her owners are leaning towards keeping in mares races but anything can happen, we're taking it one race at time".

Coup De Main, Super Star Bob and Man Of Peace are other Kosciuszko contenders in the Dale stable.
