2019 CAMERON HANDICAP - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Cameron Handicap is a Group 3 race run under Handicap conditions for open class horses at Newcastle conducted by the Newcastle Jockey Club.

The Cameron Handicap is run over 1500m. It was first run in 1950 and was won by Denali.

The Cameron Handicap has been over varying distances from 1300m up to 1500m. 2016 was back to 1350m as the race was run on the inner Beaumont track due to the main course proper reconstruction.

The Cameron Handicap was a Listed race prior to 2005 then Group 3 onwards.

The Broadmeadow racecourse at Newcastle is the biggest of the provincial courses in NSW and the only one in Australia to host multiple group races.

The race is named after a famous local racing identity James Cameron.

Court's In Session carried a huge weight of 60.5kg when winning in 2006.

The two most famous winners of the Cameron Handicap are two of Newcastle's best ever juveniles being Luskin Star and Romantic Dream.

The 2007 race was not held due to the Equine Influenza break out.

The Cameron Handicap is worth $160,000 in 2019. The winner is exempt from ballot for the Epsom Handicap.

The 2018 Cameron Handicap was won by New Tipperary from Red Excitement and Best Of Days.
