Curtain Closes On Group One Winners

3 minute read

Group One winners Malaguerra and Oohood have been retired.

The connections of Oohood believe the young mare has lost interest in racing while age and fitness issues have caught up with the 8YO gelding Malaguerra.

Trained by Tony McEvoy, Oohood is a valuable daughter of I Am Invincible and will covered by a yet to be determined leading sire this spring.

Her progeny will be a sought after commodity if they reach the sale ring as her dam Bella Sunday is by Japan's legendary sire Sunday Silence and is a half-sister to the leading G1 sire Not A Single Doubt.

Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Oohood won only once in 17 starts but it was a win that counted as she beat Fiesta and Nakeeta Jane in the G1 Flight Stakes over 1600m at Randwick last spring.

Until that win she had worn the tag of Australia's best maiden after a string of placings in Group races including the G1 Golden Slipper Stakes, G1 Blue Diamond Stakes and G1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes, pushing her earnings to more than $1.5 million.

McEvoy said the decision to retire Oohod was made after she finished a disappointing 11th in last Saturday's G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.

"She has lost interest in racing so we have decided to send her to the breeding barn," McEvoy said.

The curtain has come down on Malaguerra's career after winning 12 of his 35 starts and $1.865 million prizemoney.

He was at his peak in 2016 when he won the G1 BTC Cup in Brisbane and the G1 VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington. He also won the G2 Australia Stakes and recorded G1 placings in the Futurity Stakes, Manikato Stakes and Winterbottom Stakes.

Purchased for $32,000 as a yearling, the son of Magnus and the Bletchingly mare Tennessee Morn had four trainers during his career starting with Wez Hunter as a 2YO.

He then had two seasons in the Lee and Anthony Freedman stable before another transfer to Peter Gelagotis. He won the BTC Cup for the Freedmans and the VRC Sprint Classic for Gelagotis.

Most recently Malaguerra joined the Victorian stable of former Perth trainer Lindsay Smith but had just one start under his care, finishing seventh at Caulfield on August 31,
