Carnival Over For Kiwi Pair

3 minute read

Kiwi raiders Advantage and Blue Breeze are returning to New Zealand after disappointing performances at Rosehill on Saturday.

Avantage, a G1 winner in NZ who won in Sydney last season, failed for the second successive week when she finished seventh, beaten six lengths, in the G2 Shannon Stakes won by Mister Sea Wolf at Rosehill on Saturday.

The previous week she had finished a fading eighth in the G3 Bil Ritchie at Randwick won by Kolding.

A post-race veterinary examination on Saturday cleared the mare of any issues but her trainer Jamie Richards advised stewards that he would be returning the Fastnet Rock mare to NZ where she will be freshened for summer racing.

Richards will still be playing a big hand at Randwick on Saturday with the favoured pair Te Akau Shark in the G1 Epsom Handicap and his top filly Probabeel in the G1 Flight Stakes.

The Alan Morley-trained stayer Blue Breeze is also returning home after he was beaten 41 lengths when a distant last in Saturday's G3 Colin Stephen Quality over 2400m.

The G1 Auckland Cup placegetter had been beaten by a similar margin at his first Australian start when eased down in the Wyong Cup on September 6 but was placed in a trial after that failure.

A post-race veterinary examination of Blue Breeze on Saturday did not reveal any abnormalities but Morley advised stewards that the gelding would now return to New Zealand.

A strong sixth fresh up in the Tramway Stakes three weeks prior, Mister Sea Wolf was too strong here to add win ten (fourth stakes) and take his earnings beyond three quarters of a million dollars. He settled fourth (rails) early, improving to third at the 800m, remaining there to the top of the straight. When the leader drifted away from the fence inside the 400m he held his line and ran up to challenge, co-led at the 200m then drew clear soon after for a good win by a length and a quarter. Favourite Gem Song sat second from the 1000m, went up to the leader from the 400m and co-led briefly but was outfinished. Tom Melbourne led to the 400m, drifted away from the fence but was caught near the 200m then held on for third from Noire who finished quite well between runners after being second last turning in.
