Former West Australian-trained gelding Come Play With Me, who was having his third start for the Chris Waller stable, staged a solid staying effort in scoring here. He settled in eighth place before improving nicely between runners at the home turn. He went to fourth at the 300m and then kept finishing on well to grab a narrow victory. Gallic Chieftain raced in tenth place before commencing a good run at the home turn. He loomed at the 100m only to be beaten in the final strides for (long head) second. Sir Charles Road raced outside the leader (Stampede), challenged halfway down the straight and kept battling on well for a close-up third. Stampede again went to the front, set quite a reasonable tempo, got a break on straightening and held on well for fourth, beaten less than a length. Big Duke made ground from 12th at the home turn for (1.1 lengths) fifth while the favourite Brimham Rocks was always well back and disappointed in finishing (3.8 lengths) ninth.
