2019 Bondi Stakes: A rail hugging ride on Kubrick

3 minute read

Brenton Avdulla took the shortest way home in the 2019 Bondi Stakes at Randwick on Saturday on Chris Waller’s colt Kubrick.

He was on top of the rail for at least 100m up the straight.

Winning Trainer: Chris Waller (Stable rep Charlie Duckworth comments)

On winning a $1m race: "Any million dollar race is hard to win. We didn't have the most amount of luck and at the 300m when there was half a gap we were lucky to have a tough colt like him who relished the challenge and bustled his way through and showed a nice clean pair of heels. Everyone can forgive him now for a tough run from an awkward alley in the Caulfield Guineas.

On Pancho: "He had to come around the field to make his own luck rather than the opposite of what Kubrick had to do. Two nice horses for the stable and it is onwards and upwards from here."

Winning Owner: Denise Martin

On owning the winner: "It is our third million dollar race this year. The Magic Millions and Fiesta and now here. Good job Chris Waller and team."

On the ride: "It was a super ride. We can all breathe in."

Winning Jockey: Brenton Avdulla

On the ride: "It is amazing what good horses can do. I was happy that he was going to get a great run. I thought Timmy's horse had to back up from the Spring Champion. I thought I could get stuck. Then Bossy came around to keep us tight."

"My foot is on fire from the paint. He won like a top class colt. It is always nice to ride a winner but with a million dollars next to it it is even better."

On the horse: "He wasn't beaten far in a Golden Rose, finishing next to Castelvecchio who was stiff not to win the Spring Champion. You forgave him after drawing wide and didn't have much luck. Blinkers on and a master trainer who always gets them spot on."

"Wednesday I was down in the dumps when I saw the physio yesterday who said when are you planning on riding. I said there was a million dollar race tomorrow. He shook his head and said take time off tomorrow. I said I'm going to Bendigo for a half million dollar race on Wednesday."

Beaten Jockeys:

Tim Clark (Just Thinkin'): "He's just come to the end of his preparation, he's done a good job this time in, he'll be back bigger and better next time."

Robbie Dolan (Colada): "Very good run, the winner dashed up on the inside pretty fast, but he's going to go for a little spell my horse and watch out for him in the Autumn."

Jason Collett (Erno): "Just lost touch with them at stages, come again late, but the race was over."

Glen Boss (Bottega): "The blinkers had a pretty bad effect on him, he was out of control in the run, they didn't have their desired effect."

Glyn Schofield (Pancho): "He ran a tremendous race, he gave me a good feel going down to the barriers. Relaxed beautifully like you would want over the mile, he let go well, but the winner was too good."

Rachel King (Ballistic Boy): "He's a really nice horse, he's definitely got a big future, he's still learning. Hopefully the trip away will have done him the world of good."

Jean Van Overmeire (Zebrowski): "I thought he ran a nice race, I was a bit closer than I thought I was going to be, once he grows into his frame I think he'll be a nice horse."

Jay Ford (Kooweerup): "She might have come to the end of things, she travelled nicely early, but was a little one-paced to the line."

Following a tough run in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) two weeks ago, Kubrick bounced back here, finding an impossible gap along the fence at the 150m and thrusting through for a super win, his third in seven career starts. He began well but soon after eased back to fourth (rails) where he remained past the 1200m and on to the 800m. Nearing the last corner he was shuffled back and had nowhere to go inside the 400m. Full of running, jockey Brenton Avdulla rode for luck, hugged the fence and found the narrowest of gaps at the 200m, thrust through and caught the leader then ran clear for a good win. Pancho sat second last at the 800m, caught the pack rounding into the home straight and went widest from the 400m. He took some time to wind up but was doing his best work late for a solid second. Colada led them in, still led at the 200m but was caught by the winner then kept on well for third from Ballistic Boy who stuck on fairly well along the fence for fourth.
