2019 BEGONIA BELLE STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Begonia Belle Stakes is a Group 3 race run under Set Weights and Penalty conditions for four year old and up mares at Flemington conducted by the Victoria Racing Club.

The Begonia Belle Stakes is run over 1100m. It was first run in 2005 and was won by Covet Thee.

The race is named after a Newmarket winner Begonia Belle and was moved to Derby Day in 2016 when the carnival had a shake-up.

It has been always run at 1100m.

The Begonia Belle Stakes was a handicap but became Listed in 2009 and Group 3 from 2013.

2016 winner Sheidel would place in a Winterbottom then, after a spell, win the Oakleigh Plate first up.

Ortensia herself won this race then won the Winterbottom in 2011. She'd win the Alquoz Sprint in Meydan four months later and a Nunthorpe in the August of 2012.

The Begonia Belle Stakes is worth $200,000 in 2019.

Notable winners of the Begonia Belle Stakes include Sheidel (2016), Ortensia (2011) and Very Discreet (2009).

The 2018 Begonia Belle Stakes was won by Divine Quality from Booker and I Am Excited.
