2019 OTTAWA STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Ottawa Stakes is a Group 3 race run under Set Weights conditions for two year old fillies at Flemington conducted by the Victoria Racing Club.

The Ottawa Stakes is run over 1000m. It was first run in 1978 and was won by Stage Hit.

The race was moved to Cup day in 2005. It was run over 1000m early then 1100m and then 1200m before going back to 1000m where it is now.

The Ottawa Stakes was a Principal Race then Listed in 1979 before becoming a Group 3 from 2013.

The race has had numerous name changes, almost one every two years.

2013 winner Oakleigh Girl was by an Oakleigh Plate winner Snitzel out of an Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova.

Recent winners haven't had as much future success as some past winners like True Jewels and Lady Jakeo who won Blue Diamonds.

The Ottawa Stakes is worth $200,000 in 2019.

Notable winners of the Ottawa Stakes include Antelucan (2014), Oakleigh Girl (2013), Villa Verde (2012), Rostova (2008), Hips Don't Lie (2007), Rinky Dink (2002), True Jewels (2000), Tennessee Midnight (1999), Tennessee Magic (1994), Lady Jakeo (1992) and Beach Gown (1984).

The 2018 Ottawa Stakes was won by Bella Rosa from Lankan Star and Champagne Boom.
